Completely self-taught, Johnny Calsi has been playing the dhol more than twenty years. He first joined the most popular Bhangra band of that time, called Alaap. In 1991, he creates the Dhol Foundation, the largest dhol institute in Britain. He worked with the Trans Global Underground, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, members of Led Zeppelin. He created the Afro Celt Sound System group, with Moussa on talking drum and djebe, and James McNally on bodhran and whistle.
